The Lovely Bones

Peter Jackson's infatuation with fancy visual effects mortally wounds "The Lovely Bones." Alice Sebold's cheerily melancholy bestseller, centered upon a 14-year-old girl who narrates the story from heaven after having been brutally murdered, provides almost ready-made bigscreen material. But Jackson undermines solid work from a good cast with show-offy celestial evocations that severely disrupt the emotional connections with the characters. The book's rep, the names of Jackson and exec producer Steven Spielberg, and a mighty year-end push by Paramount/DreamWorks will likely put this over with the public to a substantial extent, but it still rates as a significant artistic disappointment.

Let's check the trailer...

There has been cautious optimism among longtime Jackson followers that this material might inspire him to create a worthy companion piece to his 1994 "Heavenly Creatures," which similarly involves teenagers and murder in an otherwise tranquil setting and remains far and away his best film. The potential was certainly there in the book, which reminds of Dennis Lehane's successfully filmed novels "Mystic River" and "Gone Baby Gone" in its devastating emotional trauma, but offers the distinctive perspective of the most entirely plausible omniscient narrator in modern literature.

Creation

Paul Bettany plays immortal scientist Charles Darwin in Jon Amiel’s dramatic tour-de-force “Creation.” The film is one of many events marking the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s book “On the Origin of the Species – By Means of Natural Selection.” The book and the thought process in it would change the thinking of scientists forever. The book would also begin a pitted battle that wages today between those who believe in divine creation as described in the bible and the biological process described by Darwin.

Bettany played the ship’s doctor who played the cello to Russell Crowe’s fiddle in the classic action thriller “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (he was also Tom Edison in “Dogville” and Jarvis in the “Iron Man” films). In “Commander” he was the loyal military physician first but his real love was the wonder of nature. He didn’t have to go far to fit the character of Charles Darwin.

Jennifer Connelly plays Emma Darwin the loyal and steadfast wife of the legendary scientist who is also part of his problem coming to grips with his discovery. Connelly is a stirring performer as anybody knows who saw her Oscar / Golden Globe winning performance in “A Beautiful Mind” (her performances in “House of Sand and Fog” and “Requiem for a dream” were just as mesmerizing).

The film is based on Darwin’s great-great-grandson’s book, “Annie’s Box” about the last years Darwin spent putting his thoughts in writing. This was a time of great stress for the pioneering scientist. He knew full well that his work flew in the face of the church and the vast majority of society. Nobody but the most learned scientists would even comprehend what was in it during the lifetime of Charles Darwin. Speaking of lifetimes, people who said anything as remotely as pointed and powerful as what was in the book had been burned at the stake less than a century earlier.

Paano Na Kaya ( Philippine Tagalog Movie 2010)

Just a bit of a thought, since Star Cinema has produced too many love story and comedy movies...do they have plans to make an action movie? Filipino moviegoers are literally hungry for Pinoy actions films since the King Of Philippine movies-Fernando Poe Jr. died years ago.

Paano na Kaya is set to be shown on January 27 with more than a hundred Philippine Theaters nationwide.

The Crypt

I still haven't seen this movie, i think it's about to be shown here in the Philippines but i would like to share to you a very disturbing comment shared by MovieBob about this movie...heheheehe...

This “film” is a pretentious and boring pile of trash. For you filmmakers out there, there are absolutely NO wide shots. What that means is that McMahon has no sense of what widening a scope means. Most of the movie is in a crypt, as the title suggests, that has some nice sets but we are there WAAAAAAY too long doing nothing. Just like the characters. The audience is in the crypt, bored out of their minds with the “actors,” and that is where the big problem hits. There is no story. None whatsoever. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who plans on seeing this pile but narrative elements go nowhere. Coupled with the fact that we are in the low-budget sets for so long that the flaws in the construction are readily apparent. And, if that is the best performance McMahon can pull out of his actors he should either try casting real performers or, if they were real performers, just quit as a director. I want my money back.-MovieBob

Ok bob enough hehehe...lets check out the trailer
